Chicago VI is the fifth studio album by Americanrock band Chicago and was released in 1973. It was the band's second in a string of five consecutive albums to make it to No. 1 in the US,[4] was certified gold less than a month after its release, and has been certified two-times platinum since.[5] It is the first album to feature percussionist Laudir de Oliveira, who would become a full-fledged member of the band for Chicago VIII.[6]

Background[edit]

After having recorded all of Chicago's first five albums in New York City (except for parts of the second album recorded at CBS in Los Angeles), producer James William Guercio had his own Caribou Studios built in Nederland, Colorado during 1972. It was finished in time for the band to record their sixth album the following February.[7] It would remain their recording base for the next four years.[6]

Robert Lamm authored half of the album's tracks, including his response to some of Chicago's negative reviewers in 'Critics' Choice'. James Pankow wrote the album's two hits, 'Just You 'n' Me,' which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart,[8] and 'Feelin' Stronger Every Day,' which peaked at No. 10.[9] The latter was co-composed with Peter Cetera, who also wrote 'In Terms of Two', and sang lead vocal on all three songs.

Released in June 1973, Chicago VI was another commercial success, spending five non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in the US,[4][7] and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) less than a month after its release.[5] It was certified two-times platinum in 1986, the first year the RIAA awarded platinum certification to albums released before 1976.[10] The album did not chart in the UK although the band's first three studio albums had charted in the top ten there.[11]

The album was mixed and released in both stereo and quadraphonic. The original U.S. CD release (Columbia CK #32400) was mastered for CD by Joe Gastwirt. In 2002, Chicago VI was remastered and reissued by Rhino Records, with two bonus tracks: a Terry Kath demo called 'Beyond All Our Sorrows', and a recording of Al Green's 'Tired of Being Alone', taken from the 1973 TV special, Chicago in the Rockies. In 2013, the audiophile reissue company Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab remastered Chicago VI and released it on Hybrid SACD which can be played on both CD players and SACD players.

Few debut albums can boast as consistently solid an effort as the self-titled Chicago Transit Authority. Even fewer can claim to have enough material to fill out a double-disc affair. Although this long- player was ultimately the septet’s first national exposure, the group was far from the proverbial “overnight sensation.” Under the guise of the Big Thing, the group soon to be known as CTA had been honing its eclectic blend of jazz, classical, and straight-ahead rock & roll in and around the Windy City for several years. Their initial non- musical meeting occurred during a mid-February 1967 confab between the original combo at Walter Parazaider’s apartment on the north side of Chi Town. Over a year later, Columbia Records staff producer James Guercio became a key supporter of the group, which he rechristened Chicago Transit Authority. In fairly short order the band relocated to the West Coast and began woodshedding the material that would comprise this title. In April of 1969, the dozen sides of Chicago Transit Authority unleashed a formidable and ultimately American musical experience. This included an unheralded synthesis of electric guitar wailin’ rock & roll to more deeply rooted jazz influences and arrangements. This approach economized the finest of what the band had to offer — actually two highly stylized units that coexisted with remarkable singularity. On the one hand, listeners were presented with an incendiary rock & roll quartet of Terry Kath (lead guitar/vocals), Robert Lamm (keyboards/vocals), Peter Cetera (bass/vocals), and Danny Seraphine (drums). They were augmented by the equally aggressive power brass trio that included Lee Loughnane (trumpet/vocals), James Pankow (trombone), and the aforementioned Parazaider (woodwind/vocals). This fusion of rock with jazz would also yield some memorable pop sides and enthusiasts’ favorites as well. Most notably, a quarter of the material on the double album — “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?,” “Beginnings,” “Questions 67 and 68,” and the only cover on the project, Steve Winwood’s “I’m a Man” — also scored as respective entries on the singles chart. The tight, infectious, and decidedly pop arrangements contrast with the piledriving blues-based rock of “Introduction” and “South California Purples” as well as the 15-plus minute extemporaneous free for all “Liberation.” Even farther left of center are the experimental avant-garde “Free Form Guitar” and the politically intoned and emotive “Prologue, August 29, 1968″ and “Someday (August 29, 1968).”
